Toyota VIN check and auction history

Toyota builds vehicles for the US market in Japan, the United States, Canada and Mexico, and the first character of the VIN shows where. Japanese-built Toyotas start with J (for example JTD or JTM), US-built models with 4T1 or 5T…, and Canadian-built models such as many Corollas and RAV4s with 2T…. Lexus uses JTH and 2T2.

Position 10 gives the model year and position 9 is a check digit. Hybrids and conventional versions of the same model usually differ in the VIN's descriptor section, which the decoded specifications on each VIN page show.
